Departmental Principles Regarding Course Equivalency – May 2025
Course equivalency procedures in the Department of Physics are carried out in accordance with the relevant regulations, directives, and procedural principles currently in effect at İzmir Institute of Technology (İYTE). While making departmental board decisions related to course equivalency, the following legislative provisions are taken as the basis:
İYTE Undergraduate Education and Training Regulation, Article 18
İYTE Undergraduate Course Equivalency and Adaptation Directive, Article 6
İYTE Summer School Regulation, Article 12
İYTE Double Major (ÇAP) Directive, Article 11
İYTE Undergraduate Students’ Procedural Principles, Article 11
The relevant regulations and other current arrangements can be accessed through the following link:

General Principles
These principles cover the major, minor, and double major (ÇAP) programs within the undergraduate program of the Department of Physics.
Students applying for course equivalency must submit a justified Course Equivalency Form that includes the course content, credit, and ECTS information. The form must be signed by both the student and their academic advisor. Applications must be submitted to the Department of Physics with the signed form and attached documents.
Course equivalency principles and relevant announcements are regularly shared on the department’s website.
Authorized Committees and Process Management
The following authorized persons and committees are responsible for evaluating course equivalency applications and managing the process:
Major Program and Summer School: Academic Advisor and Department Chair
Minor / Double Major (ÇAP) Programs: Minor/ÇAP Committee and Department Chair
Erasmus and Exchange Programs: Erasmus Coordinator, Academic Advisor, and Department Chair
Applications are evaluated based on the completeness of the required documents and compliance with the set criteria. When necessary, the matter is discussed and resolved in the Department Board.
Departmental Principles for the Equivalency of Compulsory Courses
Compulsory course equivalency procedures in the Department of Physics are carried out in accordance with the relevant regulations, directives, and procedural principles in force at İzmir Institute of Technology.
Additional principles specific to the Department of Physics are listed below:
Courses taken at international or national universities through Erasmus or summer school programs can only be counted as technical or non-technical elective courses; they cannot be counted in place of compulsory courses.
In cases where there is a mismatch in ECTS values of equivalent courses, the student will be informed about potential deficiencies regarding the diploma supplement and total ECTS load. Responsibility in this matter rests with the student.
Departmental Principles for the Equivalency of Technical Elective Courses
Technical elective course equivalency procedures in the Department of Physics are carried out in accordance with the current regulations, directives, and procedural principles of İzmir Institute of Technology.
Additional principles specific to the Department of Physics are listed below:
In accordance with Article 11 of the İYTE Undergraduate Students’ Procedural Principles, a non-technical course cannot be counted in place of a technical elective course, and vice versa.
However, in the case of courses taken through Erasmus or similar exchange programs, this rule may be relaxed. In such cases, a technical elective course may be counted as a non-technical elective, but a non-technical elective may not be counted as a technical elective.
In determining the equivalency of technical electives taken through Erasmus, opinions from the Erasmus Coordinator and relevant faculty members are considered. The equivalency is finalized by the Department Board.
According to the Physics Department’s 2023 Undergraduate Curriculum, out of 12 elective courses: 3 are non-technical electives, and 9 are technical electives. Five of the technical electives must be taken from the Physics Department elective courses. Technical electives taken from other departments must be third- or fourth-year courses from the Faculty of Science or Faculty of Engineering. Courses from the Faculty of Architecture will not be accepted as technical electives.
In cases of mismatch in ECTS values of courses taken from other departments, the student will be informed about potential deficiencies regarding the diploma supplement and total ECTS load. Responsibility in this matter rests with the student.
Departmental Principles for Course Equivalency in Minor and Double Major (ÇAP) Programs
Course equivalency procedures in minor and double major (ÇAP) programs within the Department of Physics are carried out in accordance with the relevant regulations and directives of İzmir Institute of Technology and departmental procedural principles.
Additional principles specific to the Department of Physics are listed below:
A Physics Department student pursuing a minor cannot count a compulsory or technical elective course taken from the minor program as a compulsory or technical elective course in the Physics Department.
A Physics Department student pursuing a double major cannot count a compulsory course taken from the second major as a compulsory course in the Physics Department.
However, a Physics Department student pursuing a double major may count a compulsory course from the second major as a technical elective in the Physics Department. This process requires a recommendation from the Minor/Double Major Committee and approval by the Department Board.
A Physics Department student pursuing a double major cannot count a technical elective from the second major as a compulsory course in the Physics Department.
A Physics Department student pursuing a double major may count a technical elective from the second major as a technical elective in the Physics Department. This process requires a recommendation from the Minor/Double Major Committee and approval by the Department Board.
In cases of mismatch in ECTS values of the courses, the student will be informed about potential deficiencies regarding the diploma supplement and total ECTS load. Responsibility in this matter rests with the student.
